3   3still the best after all these years... ... I have to use Windows at work and I still hate the philosophy behind it. ... and allthough Linux has it's benefits and has more and better hardware-support it's GUIs still suck. ******@***.net
4   1*******
5   3But more and more I find it necessary to use other platforms because of lack of software that runs on eCS/OS2. I doubt I will be able to continue using it much longer if this doesn't change, and I see not evidence that it will.
6   2I'd dump it if I could afford to get a new laptop with XP.
7   2The primary reason is it fits my needs, which in turn makes me a Fan.
8   2Apart from having invested much in OS/2, I simply don't want Windows. And I'm still not very comfortable with Linux, which will probably be for me the follow-up OS when eCS would become too 'complicated' w.r.t. hardware support (dual core, USB devices, etc). *** *********, ****@****.nl
9   2I also use WinXP -- far fewer problems with eCS. *********@**.inter.net
10   2I am a retired IBM employee, grown up there with all versions of DOS and OS/2. Brought son Bart into it also. The eCS-OS/2 community world-wide, I love it. No preparred installation, possibility to arrange my system as want have it etc, etc.
11   2- It is the most secure server platform. - Clock-cycle per clock-cycle it is one of the fastest operating systems. - It can perform very well on low-level hardware. ********@*****.com
12   2It's the best and most stable OS so far made The big problem is that development of programs for OS2 has more or less stopped
14   3eCs is (almost) all I need. *****@***.de
15   2It is stable I love it Im the boss of my PC (no redmond) Can do the thinks on my way
16   2The OS fits my needs, I'm also a fan, not making big money, but big savings. *******@***.net
17   2It's not really possilbe to give an accurate answer when limited to a single choice from the menu. **************@*******.net
18   2I'm forced to use XP at work and that is again and again prooving to me that OS2 and eComstation continue to be the right OS for me. ********@********.dk
19   3Es w.re sch.n wenn Mehrfachselektion m.glich w.re. Als Auswahlgrund fehlt z.b. 'Virensicherheit'.
20   3I use eCS mainly for "nostalgic" reasons. Used OS/2 from 1.3 to Warp 4 and was extremely satisfied. However, switched to FreeBSD ~1999 (via Windows 98, SuSE Linux and Debian). However, when I found my old OS/2 CDs/Diskettes/Manuals I installed Warp 4 again on an old System, and shortly after bought eCS 1.2.However, just use eCS seldom and don't do any real work with it. **************gmx.de
21   2I am retired, but have a small business. Product is a "call out facility" connected to an IBM mainframe checking its availableity (which is BTW 99,9999%) and allows messages from the mainframe application to be sent to the "outside world" i.e. GSM/SMS, pagers (you name it). The product is there for more then 10 years. Mostly used by the large banking corps. It runs on a small robust industrial computer 7x24x365, and it runs for years. Therefore: eCS (was OS/2) it runs and it runs and it runs... Thank YOU for taking care of eCS! Best regards, ***** *** *** ****** *********@******.nl
22   2Nothing compares - imagine what a 64-bit version would be like! ******@*********.**.net
23   2Mostly security concerns. I also use it because it is like a old leather coat- it fits well and looks even better!
24   2OS/2 makes the less trouble.

26   21. reliability 2. speed 3. bug free 4. stable
27   2I had enough of windows (98se) so I switched to ecomstation 1.1 ******@*****.com
29   9It fits my needs (almost all) until now...
30   2I prefer an operating system that is way cooler than the others; IMO.
31   2Of course I am a fan, and it would be a serious learning curve to move to, for example, Linux (have started on this road three times) but it is much more critical that the OS simply meets my needs. I am very grateful to the technical community that keeps modernizing its functionality. ********@****.*********.edu *** *******
32   2I started with OS/2 in 1968 (IBM 360/30) and too lazy to change
33   2More , because support seems better than IBM's support for OS/2 Warp !!!
34   3kein st.ndiges Viren-suchen, keine st.ndigen 'Sicherheits'-Updates, niedrige Folgekosten, seltene total-Abst.rze. F.r meinen Betrieb genau das richtige!
35   2****.***.*******@*****.com
36   2Well,... some of the other choices apply also. I do have a lot of software for, and knowledge about, OS/2. It would take a lot of time and effort to switch, even if I wanted to. When I have some free time, I'll get a Linux installation to complement the OS/2 though.
37   2I am japanese OS/2 USER. I'm lovin it.
38   1........., . ....... 64-. ... ".... .." ...-...... "......"? :)) ********@**.fm
39   3to play around with it... not for productive use
40   2I ama a fan since V 1.1. It also fits my needs very well.
41   2The assembler written kernel and Mesa2 with scripts is the fastest most reliable solution to my accounting situatation. Ie, a custom solution written in Mesa2 scripts. No worms, trojans, viruses, and no continual upgrades requiring $$$.
42   2I am not currently using eCS or OS/2 but am a fan of the platform.
43   2Legacy Support only - migrating to MAC
44   2I am a fan of OS/2 and it fits my needs. I like that it is generally faster than M$, does not get viruses or worms, generally all program related files are in the same directory as the program (not scattered all over my HDD), crashes far less often than M$ in my experience, and I like the fact that the entire community from SSI all the way down is working to make the system more compatible and easier to use rather than the M$ way of trying to make the system more obscure and complex, and less compatible. I am also very fond of the support available in the discussion groups. That's about it! *********@**********.com
45   2Although I am (obviously) an OS/2-eCS fan, I found it hard to decide what was my main reason for using it. I also think that the OS fits my needs, in that it is secure and untroubled by the viruses and other malware which plague Windows users. I have also invested a lot of money and effort into the system. However, I must also say that support for modern hardware needs a lot of improvement. (I know and appreciate that a *lot* of work is being done right now, so please don't take this as a criticism or a complaint). I really wish I were a programmer (instead of just a humble user), so that I could contribute more to the effort. E-Mail: *******@gmail.com
46   2I use OS/2 because I have software that doesn't have an identical windows version & because I like the interface. The ability to use Svista bridges the gap a bit, but problems with using various USB devices plus the inability to use the onboard intel sound card on my modern machine are annoying.
47   7I am especially happy with the great DOS - Integration, the WPS and the lack of viruses!
48   2Its the best.
49   2I have been using OS/2 since Version 2.0 and have simply never found any reason to switch.
50   2Since the floppy package, os/2 made more effort for me than other OSses. Still has functions that you won't find in any other OS, and I can decide how i want to use it. ****@*******.ws 3x WSeB (dunhill.ws) 2x ECS (client workstations) 1x Suse 10.1 (chillispot/freeradius)
51   2PMFax, the IBMWorks calendar/appointment module and InCharge are the only reasons I don't switch completely to my Mac.
52   3For me OS/2-eCS is easy to use, runs fast, allows control over config.sys. Control over my home network is tricky, but when it runs, it seems to be safe - danger from virusses minimal.
53   2This a Poll, and I have vited the first reason, but, I use OS/2 and ECS as a personal desktop when I can (not a my main job, now) and for my servers, all of them work fine with it.
54   5System is stable and quite powerful even though its age and related limits. It remains unsurpassed in many issues - not only the WPS OO concept. *******.******@******.it
55   2I don't have to worry about virii, trojans, worms, etc
56   2Security!!! Thats my big reason for using it. And the fact that it 'just works'. Period. No questions asked. What software ran on it 2 years ago, still runs on it today. My icons and system admin stuff is in the same place, and I'm not having to re-learn the OS every time an update comes out.
57   2It is still YEARS ahead of the Windows Operating? system, and on a par (at least) with Linux or Mac 10.... **********@*******.net
58   3Because it's working. ;)
59   2Since 2.0 it's the OS that's come closest to working the way I naturally think. ****@****.*******.edu
60   2I also admit to being a fan, but I have always needed a reliable, secure and efficient system that is easy to use. OS/2 fits all of those requirements, ansd I haven't found anything else that can even comes close to being as good.
61   2I like the WPS over all other user shells I have seen so far + I know the system so well...
62   2I like that more and more OpenSource finds its way this way. ********@*******.dk
63   2I've been using OS/2 (and, more recently, eComStation) since version 1.1 -- the first version with a GUI interface. The early interface was very much like Windows 3.0. With the release of the Workplace Shell, it became immediately apparent how a good user interface that allowed each user to interact with the system in the way most natural to him improved individual productivity. Too bad IBM wasn't more capable in the marketing department. *******@*********.net
64   2and it runs on my old machine (AMD KII 500Mhz). *******.*****@web.de
65   1C...... . ........... OS/2 ......, ... ... .... ..... ...., . ..... - ......, ... ......, . ... .... ............. ..... .. 100%.
66   2Looking Forward eComStation 2.0 GA

68   2I use it for my data archive via xcopy to 250 gig HD's and my printserver machines. I feel eCS is perfect for special applications.
69   2os2 and mac os the 2 best are under my desk!
70   2I want OS/2 to live forever although IBM has vanished. I believe OS/2 continues to bring us much benefits for more few years.
71   2I have used OS/2 since ver 2.1. It has always impressed me for its stability, compatibility with plain DOS, serial and parallel ports, and of course the multi-tasking performance. Nothing else needed, just support the various file systems, and new hardware as well as the older stuff. ********* *.*******@********.***.nz

73   2ecomstation does most of what I want & making new stuff work is good practice
74   2Since 1993, almost all of my computing is in OS/2 environment. We can use TeX/LaTeX, GNU utilities in OS/2. I don't need Windows. *****@*********.net JUN Sawataishi

76   2I have used Windows and Linux and my personal opinion is that OS2/EcomStation is much safer to use on the Internet and much easer to use than Linux...I still can't understand why IBM quit supporting this Operating System. With the maintenance release of Ecomstation 1.2 I was finally able to install Ecomstation on my ACER Aspire 3000 laptop. Thanks... ******@********.**.com

87   2OS/2 fits to my style, but it become more and more hard with new devices, file formats, and network services. So, I have a plan to move to FreeBSD. However, I'm lazy to setup new environment, so that I've been using OS/2 now.
88   2It just works. Also internet usage - no virii, malware, trojans or other crap to infect my system. Still the best OS - windows has become too complicated, linux needs to be simplified esp installation of programs. I can copy my email directory to a zip drive & run it on another os/2 system no problem..... But printers, usb flash drives etc become more & more difficult. John - **********@******.ca
89   2Stability of the OS and freedom from viruses
90   2I have been using it since v. 2.1; I am a big fan and also it fits my needs. The few Windows programs I have to use (financial software) I am still able to run under Virtual PC. jose **********@*****.com

96   2used oS/2 since warp 3
97   2Have used OS/2 since version 2.10 eComStation does what I need for the most part. I think the tcpip setup need work due to updates in wireless technology and protocol changes.
98   3Another reason-categoriy: OS/2 is free of Spam and Virus
99   2eCS-OS/2 is largely like Linux, without the LInux "geek" aspects. Of course, its file system is a bit obsolete (no file permissions). But the kernel and the WorkPlace are excellent, as is the user community's porting of many UNIX/Linux applications. My only complaint is that it is falling way behind in two critical aspects: - pdf file support. Innotek's Acrobat Reader 5.1 port is not good, and many files are pdf 1.4 now, so Acroread 4.05 won't display them correctly. - media support: no Flash 8, poor Flash 7, no Real or WIndows players means too many restrictions using the Internet. Claims by some that there is no need to access sites that require media support are nonsense: the Toyota and Honda sites don't work with eCS-OS/2 latest browsers (Firefox, etc.) and not being able to access them is a major drawback. onward ever! **@********.edu
100   3I am still on a fully up-to-date Warp4. I would be glad to switch to eCS, but I do not like and do not need LVM. Unless I can select a non-LVM system for installation with eCS, I will stay with good old and stable Warp4 Ingo

103   2When you know how to set it up, its a very stable server platform, it just runs for years (os2site.com :-), its comfortable to use, and while it works why change something thats not broke. Cheers *** * ******* http://comkal.net/ http://os2site.com/
104   3less problems with virus, worms, ...
105   2I no longer have OS/2 or eCS installed on any of my systems. After faithfully supporting V3, V4, eCS 1.0 and 1.1 I gave up on the liklihood eCS would supply printer drivers, scanner drivers, or Palm syncing, in any kind of timely fashion. 1.1 would not even install on my system. I have no hostility to OS/2 or eCS, just sadness that the promise was never realized. I'm currently using SuSE Linux 10.1 and may move to Kubuntu later this year, but I doubt very much I'll ever move back to proprietary software.
106   2Its nostalgic and cool. ;-)
107   2Its not window$ and it does more than window$ except for some specific multimedia, and those I generally work around or not use due to incompatability with customers.
108   2OS/2 forever
109   2I love OS/2 / eCS. i have used Warp since v2. I got hooked on seeing v1 in action at a developer's house. It is stable. The workplace shell is fantastic. It doesn't get attacked by viruses, etc. I can sort out problems that come up for the most part and go to people on the net wwho can sort out what is beyond me. It it relatively easy to sort out the config.sys and I don't have Windows registration nightmarish problems I have reached my level of computer os incompetence with setting up networks and I think the new eCS v2 install program will do that for me so I can have a mixture of eCS, Warp and Windows XP and 2k I don't have to build a new, more powerful computer for every new version, but I did upgrade from my 486 to a pentium for speed. It runs on my ancient TP. Lotus Smartsuite is platform independent and does a reasonable, but not always good enough job with reading and coverting Word - or to Word. (I need to use Windows for Photoshop CS2. I have one game I love that needs WinXP, my husband loves Fritz (chess), so I am resigned to having a mixed system.) I love the Warp eCS community. It is full of folks with the right attitude towards life and people - helpful and spirited with tolerance for difference. I was a founder of WarpUK and proud of doing my part. I could go on and on and on with the good stuff, but I have to go get to work. Downside: I am worried that it won't keep up with new hardware and drivers. My main Warp computer is an AT 233mHz. I am going to move it all to a newer computer with eCS v2 when it is out of beta. ***** ***** *****@***************************.co.uk

111   9FInding the main reason is difficult... it's always a little bit of everything. It begins with "I was sick of windows' issues and of early linux distributions destroying my partition tables", then continues with "therefore I invested a lot in OS2/eCS", and ends up with "right now, it still fits my basic needs". However, it is a hassle to reboot each time I have to use MatLab, Fortran 90, or any recent engineering software.
112   2Hello all. I am fan of OS/2, and The OS/2 fits my needs. That is the true.
113   2OS/2-eComstation is stable and reliable; I am tired of Microsoft's strategy of abandoning software, in an effort to make everyone buy latest (but not greatest) - also, I believe software should serve our needs, not be a way to force people to buy new hardware. *********@yahoo.com
114   2It does what I need it to do and besides I hate M$ win crap. I would love to make the system more multimedia capable. If any of you have any info/sw/hw etc on how to make my PC more multimedia system I would appreciated the info.
115   2I am fan of OS/2 (eComStation)

Why do I use eCS? My reason is composite.

First of all, I use Windows at work and home too. Having been an OS/2 user from the 2.1 times, I find it more comfortable to work with, more powerful and more intuitive (this accounts for kernel and UI).

Being not a "bells and whistles" fanatic, I find its GUI better than the Windows counterparts (from 95 on); it's more polite and I find easier to work with it.

Just to add some more info: I have been forced to use only Windows for over two years, and when I got back in eCS 2 with a new PC (built solely for this purpose) I felt like I got back home from a looooong voyage...

So, to me it's simply that; I feel more comfortable on eCS than on Windows (or Linux), even though I use both. This goes also for applications: I have what I need and I can definitely go on with eCS. I'm actually migrating my works from the old Windows machine to the new eCS machine. I will, though, keep Windows for those things I (for now) can't do with eCS (like Skype chat).

* A-2: Robert Wolfe: Myself, I run an OS/2-based telnetable BBS. The BBS software and all mailers for it are native OS/2 textmode applications. I use SIO2k and VModem to allow for the incoming telnet connections.

* A-3: Massimo: a) security reasons, b) also for the fact that i run os/2 since 1993 so i believe to have a good know-how on the OS side, c) low TCO (smaller hardware, less memory etc..)

* A-4: Eugene Tucker: I use eCS because I like the overall feel and flexibility of the operating system. I have used OS/2 since 1992.

* A-5: Craig Miller

I use eCS for a few reasons but the biggest is that it just "feels" like the right OS. I have always felt the most comfortable in eCS.

I have tried a few OS's and nothing gave me the enjoyment of eCS. I have been using OS/2 since the 2.1 days, so though I would never consider myself a master of the OS, I do feel like I know it better then anything else out there.

I enjoy the challenges eCS give me when things don't work 100% of the time. It's is normally something I have done wrong but when it works it is a great feeling. With Windows I just feel like it's just there, a dead thing.

...I'm drinking japanese [sake]. I'm thinking your question.

I'm japanese OS/2 user. I like OS/2's UI. I like OS/2's etiquette. I like OS/2's file systems

......Uuuummmmmm,I awfully get drunk.

* A-7: Felix Miata:

1-Started using OS/2 full time in 1997 when I decided it was time for internet access. I wanted to keep using my SVGA DOS apps without using monopolyware to do it. OS/2 was the only choice AFAICT.

2-I continue to use it as eCS _only_ because I don't seem to be able to find a round tuit for learning how to use Linux to run my SVGA DOS apps. This may change before much longer because Geckos have become too bloated to operate satisfactorily within eCS' 512M memory limitation.

3-Switching to Linux exclusively would allow me to save money/dead dinosaurs by running only one puter 24/7 while still doing everything I do now, which I couldn't do if running only eCS without buying software that's free on Linux. Besides, I'd still have the archaic eCS memory limitation even if that software was free.

B-1) Tim Stephen:

My business runs 100% on ecs-os/2 machines since 1994 or 1995. Before that it was on IBM mainframes so os/2 was a natural progression. The internet site built on ecs-os/2 runs 100s of client/server processes 24/7 in response to user input over the net. It's secure, stable, configurable, inexpensive, capable, remotely controllable, and to my mind offers a particularly self consistent and coherent development platform for work. Runs old but capable and valuable DOS apps almost seamlessly. The object oriented UI has yet to be matched, but my particular joy is that it is pretty much an ultimate environment for working with Rexx, which is the language I've used to build the business. I use Macs for my music hobby and windows for those applications that require windows. The heavy lifting of data analysis and preparation, program development etc -- the stuff that allows me to earn my living -- is done almost exclusively on ecs. I'm very happy with it but worry about my situation once IPV6 come into wider play.

B-2) John H.Lindsay:

Hmmmm...... Firstly, it's because of the general quality of the user software, particularly the compilers. On the whole, they are more complete, easier to use, and reliable. Some of the operating system concepts make allow the compiler writers to conceive of and create more meaningful software.

Secondly, it's the OS/2 workplace shell and the ways the user can do the things he is trying to do. The pervasiveness of drag and drop is a particularly appreciated item.

B-3) Maurilio Longo: I'm using OS/2 since the beginning of 1993, when OS/2 Warp came out, I still use it on a daily basis on a couple of PCs here at work because... well I feel a sentiment of "love" for it, like for a very old friend of the past, and it still does a good job in what it does here.

B-4) Stefan W. Christensen

> With that, why do you use eCS? It's a personal reason so no wrong or right answer.

1. The OS is old, and therefore higher quality than (not as bloated as) newer OS's.

2. It works for my uses (scientific programming).

3. The UI looks more pro than Windows and - especially - Linux (which tends to look like a childs toy).

4. No malware/vira written for it.

5. It isn't used by, nor made for, dummies.

B-5) Julian Thomas:

Started with OS/2 2.1 way back when. At that time it was the cheapest way (and it still cost me $1000 for the DCE toolkit) to get a running DCE environment. Since then DCE is no longer a factor, but the availability of Rexx is a major factor (Regina doesn't quite hack it for me) and being able to script things that aren't scriptable in a Win32 environment.

B-6) Gene Alexander:

I use eCS 2.0 to test old OS/2 software on new hardware for my client companies that need to keep their old OS/2 software running. I also use eCS 2.0 to build systems or virtual machines for my clients using a specific set of hardware or VirtualBox (on Linux). I also use eCS 2.0 to test new hardware to find out what works with eCS when I have new systems to build for clients who run other operating systems.

Sadly, I have not used eCS for my day to day business for several years now as I moved to GNUCash for accounting when I abandoned doing everything with Lotus spreadsheets. I needed an inexpensive or "free" accounting solution for SOHO micro-businesses and GNUCash on Linux ended up being the best fit for what I needed. I will probably not go back to using eCS for my own business unless I see a real benefit to doing so in the future. Such as a better IPv6 implementation than anyone else, or something similar.
