Epson LP-S3500
Marca: Sufficiente The Epson Offirio LP-S3500 is a current Japanese-market laser printer
which uses the ESC/Page printing language.
ESC/Page is *not* related to ESC/P or ESC/P2, which are 'dumb' JCLs
for dot-matrix and inkjet printers. ESC/Page is a fully-fledged
page-description language for laser printers, on a par with PCL.
There is a very old Japanese-only ESC/Page printer driver buried
deep on the OS/2 DDPak site, but it is long obsolete, and causes
crashes and traps on recent systems.
That's the bad news. The good news is that Epson released open-source
ESC/Page drivers for Ghostscript several years ago. If you have a recent
build of Paul Smedley's Ghostscript port, you can use Ghostscript as a
printer driver to print to various models of Epson laser printer,
as described at:
http://svn.netlabs.org/ecups/wiki/GhostScriptRasterPrinting
For the LP-S3500, one should use the Ghostscript 'lp8700' driver.
Once configured, printing works very well. I've only given this a mark
of "average" because (a) the initial setup is quite complicated
(but you should only have to do it once), and (b) printer-specific
features aren't necessarily supported fully, due to having to use
a generic Postscript driver (but it might be possible to improve that
by finding a better PPD file).
I've successfully printed to several printers of this model via TCP/IP
(using the LPD protocol). Instructions as described through the URL above.
